Did Santa Bring You A Computer This Year?

Can you feel it? It's in the air - that post-holiday excitement we all seem to pick up at the start of a new year. It's the perfect mix of New Year's resolutions and childlike exuberance at having some time to play with our new toys from the Christmas holiday. And perhaps this year Santa was particularly good to you. For many appraisers he brought low interest rates and more orders. Others of you may be smitten with your first hand gun - the gift you thought you'd never want until you started appraising foreclosures this past year. But the likelihood is that many of you just picked up a new computer, and with every new computer comes the opportunity to meticulously move every important file and setting from your old computer onto your new dream machine. Or so you thought...

Moving files is usually one of the biggest headaches involved with a new computer. But for those of you who have Vault and WinTOTAL, it doesn't have to be. Sure, most of you probably know that Vault is as good for moving files from computer-to-computer as it is for your backup solution, but did you know it can move everything else about your WinTOTAL setup as well? Your QuickLists, your contacts, and every quirky setting you've applied so WinTOTAL runs "just right". You can move them ALL to your new computer in just a few seconds using Vault's companion - Exact.

Here's the breakdown:

  1. First, make sure you've run a Vault backup of all your appraisal files so you can download those onto your new computer.
  2. Then, run Exact. If you've never run Exact before, you'll need to set it up first. Just go to help.alamode.com/videos/appraiser/vault/ for a quick rundown on how to do it. Once you're ready to run Exact, go to the Start menu, All Programs, find a la mode Vault, and click Backup Your Preferences. (pq)
  3. From there, follow through the wizard and Exact will back up everything about your WinTOTAL configuration in about 30 seconds. (Really... that's all it takes.)
  4. Once you've backed up your old computer, be sure to install WinTOTAL and Vault on your new computer. If you need to download WinTOTAL, just log into your a la mode account at www.alamode.com/myaccount.
  5. Install and configure Vault and Exact. If you need a quick rundown on how to do this, the Vault video in step 2 will cover that for you too.
  6. Log into your Vault account at www.alamode.com/vault, check all of the appraisal files you want to download to your new computer and click Restore.
  7. Once all of your files are back in place, go to the Start menu, All Programs, find a la mode Vault, and click Restore Your Preferences.
  8. Follow through the wizard and your settings are back in place.

It's that simple. For those of you who haven't had the chance to use Vault in a while, be sure to watch the short video at help.alamode.com/videos/appraiser/vault/. The five minutes you spend on that video could save you hours of frustration and a few blank DVD's as you get started with this year's latest and greatest computer hardware.
